Metabolism Information That Spells Weight Loss
Many dieters are being exposed to a perhaps unfamiliar word – metabolism. They wonder what metabolism has to do with losing weight. Metabolism is a term used to describe the speed at which your body utilizes food and turns it into energy. Metabolism occurs in our muscles and in our organs as a result of the calories that we burn up.
You may hear people refer to “basal metabolism”. This is the metabolic rate or the caloric expenditure that is needed by the body to maintain basal body functions. Basal body functions include the beating of your heart, your breathing, and the degree to which you have muscle tone. Basal metabolism is the rate at which your body is doing all of this while your body is at rest (sleeping or in a reclining position). There are about 75% of your daily calories that are expended in basal metabolism.
You have at your disposal many ways in which you can boost or speed up your metabolism. When you boost your metabolism you burn more calories which when you are overweight will mean that you will lose weight.
You can make sure that you always eat a healthy breakfast. Skipping breakfast by fasting gives your body the false idea that you are starving and it goes into a protective mode and slows down your metabolism. When your metabolism slows down you burn less calories and do not lose weight, in fact you can gain weight.
Researchers have demonstrated that eating earlier in the day can help you to lose weight. Your last food of the day should be eaten four hours before bedtime.
It is important that you eat a minimum of 1200 calories each day. If you eat fewer calories each day, you will send your body into starvation mode by slowing down your metabolism.
It is important to exercise every day. The best type of exercising is to participate in aerobic exercises such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, or aerobic dancing. It is best to exercise in the mornings. When you exercise everyday your metabolism will kick into high gear and you will lose weight faster.
When you have toned muscles, your metabolism speeds up. You can tone up your muscles by doing weight training.
You can be physically active in the little everyday stuff that you do such as when you park your car at work, school, recreational situations, or when you shop. Park as far from the entrance as you can so that you have to walk further. Use the stairs instead of the elevator; use hand tools such as a broom instead of a blower so that you burn more calories.
Avoid drinking alcoholic drinks as alcohol depresses your metabolism and also can stimulate your appetite.
